Premier officially launches the Sarawak Science Centre
A milestone for science education, scientific talent and the next generation of Sarawak innovators.
The Sarawak Science Centre (SSCiEX) was officially launched by the Premier of Sarawak, YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Zohari Bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, marking a significant milestone in Sarawak's efforts to strengthen science education, develop scientific talent and inspire the next generation of innovators.
The launch ceremony held at SSCiEX in Petra Jaya was attended by members of the Sarawak Cabinet, senior government officials, representatives from various agencies and institutions, as well as stakeholders and guests.
In his address, the Premier emphasised that the establishment of SSCiEX represents a strategic investment in Sarawak's young generation and human capital. He highlighted the importance of nurturing curiosity, scientific thinking and practical skills among young Sarawakians to prepare them for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
The Premier also encouraged young people to explore emerging fields including green hydrogen technology, artificial intelligence, aerospace and other science and technology-related disciplines, which will play an increasingly important role in shaping Sarawak's future economy.
SSCiEX is a strategic investment in Sarawak's young generation and human capital.
He further highlighted the importance of developing home-grown scientists and researchers who can harness Sarawak's natural resources, technological capabilities and biodiversity while contributing towards addressing global challenges, particularly climate change.
A key feature of SSCiEX is its emphasis on interactive and experiential learning, providing young visitors with opportunities to explore scientific concepts, engage with interactive exhibits and develop an interest in science through hands-on experiences. The centre also includes laboratory facilities to support practical learning and scientific exploration.
The Premier also stressed that access to science education should extend to students throughout Sarawak, including those from rural areas. The centre's hostel facilities will provide accommodation for students travelling from remote areas, enabling them to spend more time exploring the centre's exhibits, facilities and laboratory experiences.
Beyond education and public engagement, SSCiEX is also envisioned as a platform for collaboration with scientists, researchers and leading science institutions internationally. Such collaborations will provide opportunities for knowledge exchange, research and innovation while allowing Sarawakian students and researchers to engage with international scientific communities.
With its establishment, SSCiEX is positioned to serve as a platform for science education, innovation, research engagement and public learning, supporting Sarawak's aspiration to develop a knowledge-based economy and a generation of scientifically literate and future-ready citizens.
The RM239 million project, approved by the Sarawak Government in 2019, was developed on a 10.97-acre site in Petra Jaya, with the groundbreaking ceremony held on 1 October 2020.
The official launch marks the beginning of a new chapter for SSCiEX as Sarawak continues to invest in science, technology and human capital development for a sustainable and knowledge-driven future.
